How does wire edm work?
Conventional EDMs use a tool to transfer current from the cathode of the tool along said metal plate to the anode, and the current occurs in reaction to melting or evaporating the metal. Because a dielectric fluid is used, little to no material debris is produced and washed away from the workpiece.
How does wire cutting EDM work?
The wire cutting EDM (or WCEDM) is pulling the thin wire taut and the charged current that is subsequently discharged acts as the cathode and is guided along the desired cutting path or slit. The dielectric fluid submerges the wire and workpiece in water, filtering and directing the sparks. The fine wire allows for more precise cutting, with slitting techniques up to 3 inches wide and precise positioning at +/-0.0002 inches. The high accuracy of wedm wire allows for complex 3D cutting processes and the manufacture of high precision stamping dies.
What are the Differences Between EDM and Wire-Cut EDM?
Wire-cut EDM wire cutters are operated by CNC-controlled instrumentation that allows for greater flexibility in controlling the wire in a three-dimensional axis. Conventional EDM cannot produce narrower angles or more complex patterns that can be performed with wire-cut EDM. the more precise cutting process allows for more complex cuts. Wire cutters are capable of cutting metal thicknesses of approximately 0.004 inches.
At a certain thickness, EDM wire cutting wire will only evaporate metal, thus eliminating potential debris, as well as all sides of the WCEDM on the wire.
