EDM VS Wire-Cut EDM

Aug. 06, 2021

EDMs can be divided into two types: conventional EDMs and wire EDMs.

How does wire edm work?

Conventional EDMs use a tool to transfer current from the cathode of the tool along said metal plate to the anode, and the current occurs in reaction to melting or evaporating the metal. Because a dielectric fluid is used, little to no material debris is produced and washed away from the workpiece.

How does wire cutting EDM work?

The wire cutting EDM (or WCEDM) is pulling the thin wire taut and the charged current that is subsequently discharged acts as the cathode and is guided along the desired cutting path or slit. The dielectric fluid submerges the wire and workpiece in water, filtering and directing the sparks. The fine wire allows for more precise cutting, with slitting techniques up to 3 inches wide and precise positioning at +/-0.0002 inches. The high accuracy of wedm wire allows for complex 3D cutting processes and the manufacture of high precision stamping dies.

What are the Differences Between EDM and Wire-Cut EDM?

Wire-cut EDM wire cutters are operated by CNC-controlled instrumentation that allows for greater flexibility in controlling the wire in a three-dimensional axis. Conventional EDM cannot produce narrower angles or more complex patterns that can be performed with wire-cut EDM. the more precise cutting process allows for more complex cuts. Wire cutters are capable of cutting metal thicknesses of approximately 0.004 inches.

At a certain thickness, EDM wire cutting wire will only evaporate metal, thus eliminating potential debris, as well as all sides of the WCEDM on the wire. Sparks will be emitted, which means that the slit must be thicker than the wire itself. On the other hand, since the wire is surrounded by a current loop, the smallest and most precise cutting path plus the diameter of both.

EDM is a metalworking technique and an unconventional process that processes parts that are resistant to conventional machining processes. thousands of sparks are discharged into the metal workpiece to make the cut, but the necessary condition is that these parts must be electrically conductive, usually in metallic materials such as steel, titanium, alloys and brass. the EDM process does not cut the material, but melts or vaporizes it, resulting in precise The precision technology of EDM is used in a wide range of industries to cut a variety of hard metals.

Wire EDM Applications

EDM technology and features many industrial manufacturing applications in its precision production process. EDM technology can cut small objects, so it is often used in small and high precision complex projects to achieve cost effectiveness in small production. However, in the production process of EDM, the wire must be constantly moved and cannot be reused, so copper or other metal wire can be kilometers long, which increases the cost. the production process of EDM does not require the use and avoids burrs, so it can be used for fragile items, but with relative attention to thermal stress.
